Resistance 2 Review

Resistance 2 is sequel to the very good first person shooter Resistance: Fall of Man which was a launch title for the Playstation 3. It see ms in this game it takes the story telling aspect of the first game and just kind of throws it out the window in favour for a more focused multiplayer mode.

This game picks up literally where the first one left off. You, as the only survivor of an American army troop Nathan Hale is trudging through the snow in a blizzard after shutting down a main chimera base in the first game. You are picked up by these mysterious soldiers and sedated. You wake up in an underground base where you have been given a type of medicine that will control your chimeran infection. This is basically the most detailed story telling that is in the game. Compared to the first game that heavily went and built up the lore of Resistance and how the alien invasion is converting people to their side, this game just throws in a brief voice clip just saying why something in the last game does not add up with the new game. One example of this is when you first encounter these fleshy looking sacks in a neighbourhood. Then to explain why there are these aliens inside your team mate just goes “Makes you miss the days that they needed conversion pods”.... and that’s it. No back story no nothing.

The game play in the story mode sort of saves the story telling though. This game is a solid first person shooter in terms of mechanics. Controls are very streamlined and you can tell that they borrowed some options from other successful shooters; but that is not a bad thing. Enemies are very smart and if you are not careful will kill you very fast. But sometimes kill you fast anyways. I found myself restarting a level many, many times because the enemies come at you fast and furious with bullets and just kill you so fast that you don’t even realize where the bullets came from. Other than the sometimes quick deaths the combat is solid and fun and that carries over to the multiplayer as well.

Multiplayer is something to be seen in Resistance 2. It has accomplished what used to be only be done on the PC’s and this is massive 60 player online battles. As you would think these battles are hectic but to make things more manageable the teams have been split up into 5 player squads so that you’re not just hearing voice chatter from every single person on your team. Most of these matches however just turn into running around randomly in a big map shooting every enemy you see. The team with the most miniscule of teamwork will win though. Small maps are really where it is at for more team based play but there are no gripes with the multiplayer and in my opinion it is good enough to give Call of Duty 4 a run for its money.

Other than the bad story telling compared to the last game and the sometimes super quick deaths in the single player campaign Resistance 2 is a very solid first person shooter that should not be missed by the Playstation 3 audience.

So, i hear you have a blog, WOW where was I for this? Anyways, I played this game at my buddies place. I liked the campaign multiplayer more than the PvP style multiplayer. I dunno, call me crazy, but they did it will with the classes an all, as for the PvP one it's just the same as any other one really, maybe unreal tournament?

Good review none the less, spot on spot on.
