Red Faction Gurrilla Demo Impressions

Red Faction Guerrilla is a 3rd person shooter set on mars. Now you think that is all you would need for a good game but it gets better. Like the games for the PS2 the main attraction for Red Faction is destruction and you will see that very apparent throughout the game. The new engine named GeoMod2 allows for everything to be destroyed. I don’t mean like Battlefield Bad Company destruction where you can take out the wall I mean you can take a skyscraper from fully erect to a pile of garbage scattered along the ground.

The story for Red Faction from what I could gather from the video that plays voiced by your stereotypical movie announcer before the demo starts, is that you are a guy named Alex Mason and you moved to Mars looking for a new start. But a group called the Earth Defence Force (EDF) has been abusing their power and you as a part of a rebel group called Red Faction are there to bring this corrupt group down.

The demo is your standard here is an area doesn’t go outside of it kind of demo. But for a limited area the demo has a lot of replay value. You start off with some mines, an assault rifle, and your GeoMod Hammer. The hammer is your best friend for destruction in this game, just start swinging and watch everything in your path get obliterated. Eventually in the demo you will be able to take control of one of the three available walkers that will be in the full game. The walker has a vertical and horizontal attack and will destroy anything in your path. With the walker you can just walk through buildings and watch them collapse in a pile of rubble. While all this destruction is awesome there are some slight frame rate problems when you are causing so much destruction. It is nothing significant but you will notice it, and in some cases it will actually make the destruction look cooler. So maybe it works to the game advantage.

All in all the demo was a really fun one to play and this is a game that you should keep an eye on in the near future. The game is set for release on June 2nd.Enjoy the trailer bellow courtest of Giantbomb.
